AB Background: Globally, stroke is one of the most common acute conditions in neurology, and the Czech Republic is at the forefront of the table with the highest morbidity and mortality due to stroke. The long-term effects of stroke on the health, social role and quality of life of patients bring a significant economic burden on the health and social system. Aim: The aim of this article is to define the impact of stroke on changes in self-sufficiency and the possibility of assessing the quality of life with the connection of long-term coordinated rehabilitation from the perspective of an occupational therapist. Methodology: Data were drawn from current Czech and foreign publications. The EDS Multisearch Engine was used to search for literary sources. The documents were searched in the period 2003-2021 in the Czech or English language. During the search, the following keywords were entered: stroke, quality of life, self-sufficiency, rehabilitation, occupational therapy. Results: Patients after stroke have different degrees of health consequences, and different degrees of disability and levels of self-sufficiency. The costs of rehabilitation of patients after stroke increase with the growing disability, when the costs of care for many non-self-sufficient and immobile patients are many times higher. Achieving self-sufficiency in basic daily activities improves the quality of life, makes it easier for the patient to return to the home environment and at the same time does not burden the health and social system. Conclusion: Due to the incidence of stroke, it is necessary to ensure quality continuity of treatment and long-term rehabilitation.
